Nonstructural Tabs

For the 2022-2023 Baja competition season, I was responsible for the design, manufacturing, and installation of the nonstructural tabs.

Summary

What:

Affix non-structural components to the car
e.g. body panels, seat, kill switches, driver restraints, fire extinguisher, etc
Be as lightweight as possible

How:

Designed with SolidWorks
Matched geometry of chassis and mounting components
Parts were laser cut and welded to frame

Result:

Non-structural components mounted precisely and efficiently

Skill: CAD Introduction

The nonstructural tabs served as a good introduction to CAD for me. This was my first design project with SolidWorks, and in designing and manufacturing the tabs, I learned how to design in large assemblies, create sheet metal parts, prepare manufacturing files, and make drawings. I learned a lot about designing around multiple parts in complex assemblies, as well as CAD best practices.
